October 19, 2007: Professional development course.

Trail Design

Description    This is a highly interactive course that includes a classroom overview, field tour, and a design charrette for a specific missing trail segment along the Willamette River in NE Portland.

Classroom:  The two-hour classroom session will provide an overview of the development of the Portland trail system over time, including design challenges, economic impacts, safety concerns, and trail-roadway intersections.

Field Tour:  A four-hour walking/bus tour of close-in Portland trails will focus on challenging topographical situations, right-of-way acquisition, working with stakeholders, security issues, private property issues/challenges, environmental impacts/issues, costs, liability, and other issues.

Design Charrette:  A three-hour design workshop will give participants the opportunity to develop design solutions for a specific challenging area in NE Portland along the Willamette River, where the North Portland Greenway has been proposed. Instructors will work with teams to develop and evaluate proposed design solutions. The charrette is intended to help participants think through key steps in analyzing problem areas, develop alternative solutions, solve problems, develop cost estimates, and select the most appropriate alternatives.

He has worked exclusively on alternative transportation projects for the past 12 years. He has acquired rights-of-way, master planned over 200 miles of alternative transportation routes, secured in excess of $10 million dollars for development projects, facilitated public processes on over 25 projects, addressed endangered species issues in conjunction with development projects, successfully negotiated trail rights with railroads, and overseen $35 million dollars of construction. His experience has ranged from major urban waterfront esplanades to earthen hiking and ski trails in the national forest. Formerly a City of Portland trail planner/designer, he led design and implementation of many of Portland’s premier trails.

Mr. Hudson will be assisted by trail designers Steve Durrant and Mike Rose, both Senior Designers at Alta Planning and Design.
