Overview

The Initiative for Bicycle and Pedestrian Innovation is an exciting new center for research and learning that is focused on bicycle and pedestrian travel. IBPI’s aim is to advance bicycling and walking as integral elements of the transportation system in Oregon’s communities. Our location in Portland – a national leader in these modes of travel – provides the ideal setting and a living laboratory for interactive study, practice, and education. We are housed at Portland State University’s Center for Transportation Studies, but also draw on the resources of our partner institutions at the University of Oregon and Oregon State University.

Programs

The Initiative’s programs include research, education, and information-sharing across sectors, interests, and institutions that will enhance policies, programs, and projects focused on promoting bicycle and pedestrian transportation.

Research

IBPI’s research agenda focuses on work that is relevant to and responds to the demands of practice, industry, and policy development. Research projects will focus on providing evidence that will support full integration of bicycle and pedestrian modes within transportation planning, design, engineering, programs and policy.

Education

IBPI sponsors university and continuing education programs to foster a new generation of transportation professionals who are more holistic in their approach to community and transportation systems. We are creating new courses and re-tooling existing curriculum to support student experience and knowledge in all aspects of bicycle and pedestrian transportation planning, design, and policy. Continuing education courses will provide on-going training for professionals to extend their knowledge in bicycle and pedestrian practice by focusing on relevant topics in planning, design, and program development.

IBPI is also supporting students interested in bicycle and pedestrian travel as a career through scholarships and internships.

Information-Sharing

IBPI is a resource for information and technology transfer that spans scholarly research and innovative practice. Our web site will provide a clearinghouse of resources, from scientific data to best practices, in an effort to translate research into relevant and user-friendly information, while involving professionals in research design that can be incorporated into practice and policy.

Funding

The Initiative is currently funded by seed money from the Oregon Transportation Research and Education Consortium (OTREC) and Portland State University. We are also seeking matching funds for our research, education, and technology transfer programs and need your help. We welcome the opportunity to speak with you agency, business, or organization how that you could contribute to these efforts.
